“So, how was it?” Jace asked an hour later as we drove down the winding streets toward campus. He hadn’t so much as said a word to me since we left the tattoo parlor, but then again, neither had I. I was scared if I opened my mouth he would know how jealous I’d been earlier.
I gingerly touched the silver stud in my nose and shrugged. “Fine.”
“It didn’t hurt?”
I kept my gaze diverted to the moving cars outside the passenger window. “Of course it hurt, but it was quick. Devin wasn’t bad at all. I was actually pretty impressed. He didn’t look like he knew what he was doing at first.”
“When he’s not high, he’s pretty good.”
“He was better than good actually. And tattoos hurt worse, so I can’t complain.”
“I forgot about that. You have a couple of those that you keep pretty well hidden.”
“They’re only hidden when I’m not naked,” I replied before clamping my mouth shut. Stupid, stupid thing to say.
Jace’s fingers tightened on the steering wheel, but he remained silent. Thank God.
“So are you and Gina close?” I asked, not being able to help myself.
“What do you mean?”
“I mean, it seems like you two have a history together.”
The car slowed and Jace glanced at me. “And you think this because…”
“Because of how she looked at you.”
Jace didn’t reply. He just pressed on the gas and resumed a normal speed once more.
“I’ll take that as a yes,” I replied.
Jace muttered something under his breath and I rolled my eyes.
“So you have Alexis and her? Who else do you have on call?” I asked, knowing I sounded like a jealous girlfriend, but not being able to restrain myself.
“I don’t have anybody on call.”
“Now that’s a lie,” I replied with a scoff. “I heard you with Alexis earlier.”
Jace’s brow furrowed. “Heard?”
I flushed and glanced out the window once more. “I went over earlier to see what you were doing, but you were with Alexis.”
“I was.”
“Do you normally kiss someone and then a few hours later do someone else?”
Jace chuckled bitterly at my comment and I swiveled my head to stare at him. “What’s so funny?”
“You. You’re a fucking riot,” he said angrily. His rings tapped a fierce rhythm on the steering wheel as we came to a stop at a red light.
“Am I? And why’s that?”
“Because you’re always making snap judgments about me without knowing the facts.”
“And you’ve been so fair, Jace?” I asked, glowering at him. “You’re just as bad as I am, so don’t put this all on me.
Jace sighed heavily as he rubbed a hand across his face.
“Not that it’s any of your business, but nothing happened between Alexis and I. Charlie must have just thought something was going on because she must have done something to let him think that.”
“The ribbon?”
Jace’s eyes flew to meet mine. “How did you know about that?”
“Charlie.”
We were silent for a moment, nothing but the sound of wheels moving over pavement filling the empty space. So he hadn’t been with Alexis like I’d thought.
